‘Hire Good People and Get Out of Their Way’ is a Myth

They say ‘hire good people and get out of their way’. But there are some crucial elements missing from the middle of this equation:

Hire good people and…

Make them feel welcome and appreciated
Help them connect with the people around them
Get clear on what motivates them
Make it safe for them to challenge your perspective
Constantly welcome their perspective
Create a shared vision of success
Be clear with your expectations
Give them the time they need
Give them the support and resources that they need

Then get out of their way…

but never stop doing the bits in the middle.

If someone in your team isn’t quite performing as well as you had expected they would, start with this list before concluding they’re not as ‘good’ as you thought they were.
